nth cave | Pink Beach | Single Review

Four-piece Worcester based band nth cave are back with a bang with their brand new single Pink Beach. From the initial stop-start riff that is an excellent constant throughout to the splendidly trashy hi-hats this song is the perfect comeback for the band after a year without having released any music.

The vocals from female lead vocalist Danni Timmins are gorgeously eerie and the melody line is a memorable one that you will find you are still humming in your head hours after listening to the track. The band name their influences as Wolf Alice, The Orielles and Marika Hackman and you can definitely hear elements of these bands within the vocal section in particular. Timmins’ vocals are also reminiscent of Anteros’ Laura Hayden.

It has been made evident that the band are big fans of bass, with their last single being aptly titled Bass and in this track there are moments where the instrument takes precedence which is a lovely feature that helps to give the song the inviting groove it has. This along with the brash drums and jagged guitar makes the track the head-bopper that it should be.

The soothingly beautiful guitar part that sits nonchalantly in the background during the verses adds a lighter and more innocent element to the song that is parallel to the rhythm sections. These opposing elements of light and dark add an alluring depth that works beautifully with the grungy/ alt rock vibe that the band have.

The song was recorded on iphones, a cassette recorder and a USB microphone which is a refreshing and rewarding approach to lo-fi music. This adds to the impressive DIY way that the band create and release music. Including talking at the end of the track also adds to this and allows the listener a glimpse into the process of recording the song. The tail off alien-sounding note at the very end of the track adds to the ethereal vibe of the band that keeps within the theme they already had going when releasing music and videos last year.

All of these things come together to create a tight earworm of a tune that, if played as well live, will have crowds going crazy. All we need now from this corker of a band is a provoking music video like the one for their track Bass and some more original music because if everything else they release is up the high standard of this track nth cave will be a band going places.
