Calpurnia | City Boy | Single Release

Calpurnia have finally released their debut single City Boy. Obviously a number of people have been excited about the release of their first track as fans of the world’s beloved most beloved gang of kids; specifically Finn Wolfhard of Stranger Things. However, as Wolfhard has been in cahoots with Twin Peaks, even having covered Wanted You, I think it’s safe to say everyone’s been pretty excited to see how this has inspired Calpurnia with their original music.

The first twang of the guitar riff radiates the whole vibe of the song, there’s no disappointment that Calpurnia have produced a chilled out surf rock track. The drums and bass create a relaxed tempo that keep you mellow and make you sway. The layering of the guitars creates a more complex over tone, but is the element that puts City Boy into the genre it belongs.

While the lyrics are simple this isn’t a knock on the song, I think it fits with the songs vibe. The lyrical simplicity allows you to zone out whilst listening to the song and concentrate on the instrumentation. Wolfhard’s vocals are also perfect for the genre, I do wonder if he’ll maintain the pitch he’s achieving in this track, but for now they sound awesome. Not too piercing, not too soft, but just right to create their own grit against the music and yet still sooth you into the mood of the song. The harmonies of the backing vocals really amplify the song, as the track builds up towards the end and the backing vocals become more frequent you begin to move your feet, head, hips whatever it is that you’re grooving, more.

Overall, I think the track is rad. To say this is a debut single alone is pretty impressive, but combine that with the band’s young age and it’s doubly impressive. It’s a well written, enjoyable song. It sets the tone of what Calpurnia are all about and mirrors the expectations I’ve had on their sound based on the way they’ve presented themselves online. I may have initially being intrigued by Calpurnia as a huge fan of Stranger Things, but I’m also a huge fan of surf rock, so I’m pretty stoked to be seeing another band producing tunes I can stick in my favourite playlists. With a big advantage from starting at a young age and Wolfhard being their frontman Calpurnia have got a lot of potential and look forward to watching them grow as a band and release more music!
