Blushes | Honey | Single Review

Alt-pop band Blushes are keeping up their hype with new release Honey’ Already hotly tipped by the likes of NME, HMV and BBC’s Phil Taggart, their fourth studio single is here to sweeten up your weekday blues. They released the track in January.

Mixing up some Maroon 5-esque guitar riffs with a retro synth bassline, Honey delivers a punchy pop sound, where the whimsy from its 80s funk track vibes, is perfectly complemented by the darker lyrical content of that sickly-sweet someone you can’t get seem to give up. Blushes are adding their deliciously melancholy contribution to this apparent trend of reinventing the sounds of the past, for a whole new audience.

Lead, Bradley Ayres’ dreamy vocals mellow the harsher kick drum in the verses, lulling you into the track until a grungier female vocal blows through the daze, transitioning into the explosive chorus. The sound may seem too contrasting to its backing, however this seems to be the point in a song that both delivers, and mimics the typically ‘catchy-hit’ genre.

Its unique blend of vocals helps to build this heavily textured single, where the mix of organic, alive instrumentation combines with distorted effects, and an arsenal of percussion. The result, is a song that feels as though you’re spiralling down the rabbit hole of a sugar induced coma.

Overall, it is a fun track with an edge from a band to keep on your 2018 ‘ones to watch’.
