The latest
track from Alleyways has all the BUBBLEGUM of a catchy pop record but the swagger of an indie track in its bass line. It’s
vibrant and fresh sound makes it a song for summer, longing to be heard as the festival
banger it deserves to be.
The track itself is in a constant anticipation
building up to the climax of the chorus both vocally and in terms of the riffs,
the first verse is especially slowed down awaiting the drop in the chorus: ‘Oh
I need your loving but I want your kissing, so baby just try to stop talking’.
The band are very aware of their predecessors while also finding their own
individual style, generally classed as indie pop yet leaning more towards the
pop side of the spectrum due to its far more marketable edge. The ability to
transcend genres is a great skill as it blurs previous rigid boundaries to
create something innovative in a world of regurgitated riffs. The fluidity
between genres is becoming more and more fashionable as bands no longer have
the trepidation to be considered “Pop”, something which was previously shunned
is now welcomed thanks to bands like The Magic Gang, Peace, Fickle Friends, and
Sundara Karma.
However, although the vocals and catchy chords are reminiscent
of “Bubblegum-Pop”, the breakdown in the track has the intricacies and many
layers synonymous with Blossoms record: a reminiscent and vintage feel
instrumentally, makes the record timeless. This band is definitely one to watch
to see how their style will further evolve in the future, that being said ‘BUBBLEGUM’ is a promising single, one
which would translate exceptionally in a live setting and paves the way for
more catchy and memorable songs to follow.
